Steffen Gay has graduated from the Medical School at the University in Leipzig in 1972. After medical and research training in Germany, he has been holding office from 1976-1996 at the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham AL, and  served there as Professor of Medicine from 1984 -1996. Since 1996, he became Professor of Experimental Rheumatology at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland. The Center has been recognized as a EULAR Center of Excellence in Rheumatology from 2005-2020.

He became Honorary Member of the American Association of Physicians (AAP), Spinoza Professor for 2002 at University of Amsterdam, member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2004, received the Kussmaul-Medal from the German Society of Rheumatology 2008 , and 2015 Master of the American College of Rheumatology.

He has published largely related to the molecular and cellular basis of rheumatic diseases, including with over 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers, is cited with over 45,000 citations, and has an h-index of 118.
