Challenges and Opportunities of the EU’s open access plan

Moderators: Wilfried Ellmeier & Chantal Mathieu

Plan S is a proposal of the European Commission, Science Europe, and National Research Funding organisations stating that scientific publications that receive funding from its members must be made freely accessible immediately upon publication. This means that researchers who receive public funding from participating organisations will no longer be able to publish in paid, non-open access journals. Plan S thus has substantial consequences for researchers in Europe, but also for health associations that publish in scientific journals.

 16.00  Conclusions

The morning session will be dedicated to topics that are of relevance to all member organisations including for instance the upcoming European Elections and Plan S (the European initiative that promotes open access publishing). We will invite both external speakers (such as representatives of Wellcome Trust and Science Europe) and member organisations to discuss their views on Plan S. This session will showcase key insights on how to cope with the increased push for open access publishing.

The afternoon session will allow members to discuss ongoing and upcoming BioMed Alliance activities and provide input. The agenda and related documents will be circulated shortly.

Your presence will be highly appreciated and of major significance to all member societies and to the BioMed Alliance. We hope many of you can attend the meeting and kindly ask you to confirm your participation.
